Ranikhet Excursions



Kausani is located approximately 60 km away from Ranikhet. This is a picturesque site, offering a 350-km long panoramic view of the Himalayan peaks like Trisul, Nanda Devi and Panchchuli. It lies amidst the dense pine trees, with commanding views of Someshwar valley on one side and Garur and Baijnath Katyuri valleys on the other. This place is called the 'Switzerland of India', due to similarity in landscape with the Swiss Alps. 

Binsar Mahadev


A beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, Binsar Mahadev Temple is only 15 km away from the main township of Ranikhet. It has enchanting surroundings, with a beautiful natural spring and lovely cedar forest nearby. Near the temple, there is also an ashram, dedicated to Binsar Mahadev. 

Sun Temple (Katarmal)


One of the ancient temples in Almora, the Sun temple at Katamal is approximately 800 year old. This temple is surrounded by 44 small shrines. The temple is known for its ancient exquisite architectural pattern and wonderful stone carvings, which adorn its wall. 25 km away from Ranikhet, this is a major excursion from the town. 

Tarikhet


Approximately 8 km from Ranikhet, on the way to Ramnagar, there is a beautiful, verdant and exotic village called Tarikhet. This village has a mention in history, for its participation in India Freedom Struggle. The famous Gandhi Kutiya, where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during the freedom struggle, is a place worth visiting, to feel and understand the glorious history of India. 

Sitakhet

Sitakhet is located approximately 25 km from Ranikhet. It is a scenic spot, with a panoramic view of the mystic Himalayan ranges. There is a dense forest in this area, abounding in wonderful fruit orchards and several medicinal herbs and shrubs. 

Dwarghat

This is an ancient historical site located on the Ranikhet - Karnaprayag Road, is about 38 Km from Ranikhet. This place was once the capital of the Katyuri Kingdom. It is basically famous for being the location of ancient temples like Mrityunjaya, Dhwaj, Badnirath, Maniyan, and Kachri Devtas. Every year, in the month of April, a very interesting and famous fair, Syalde-Bikhauti, fair takes place here. 

Khoont

Khoont, a small village known for being the ancestral village of the great freedom fighter - Govind Vallabh Pant, is approximately 30 km from Ranikhet............

How to Reach Ranikhet

Air
The nearest airport from Ranikhet is Pantnagar Airport. It is situated approximately 120 km away from Ranikhet, making it the perfect strip for traveling to the place by air. From the airport, you can either hire private cabs or board taxis, to reach your destination. 

Rail
The nearest rail-head from Ranikhet is Kathgodam Railway station, which falls at a distance of approximately 80 km from the town. Regular bus and cab services are available from Kathgodam to Ranikhet. 

Road
By road from Delhi, one has to take NH 24 to Rampur via Moradabad, from where NH 87 leads to Kathgodam via Rudrapur and Haldwani. From Kathgodam Ranikhet can be reached taking a state highway via Bhimtal, Bhowali and Khairna............

Nainital Excursions

Bhowali
Located 1, 706 m above sea level, Bhowali is approximately 11 kms away from Nainital. This is basically a highway intersection connecting each and every hill stations in close proximity to Nainital. This place is well-known for its picturesque splendor, the hill fruit market and its T.B. sanatorium established in 1912.
Sat Tal is located at around 23 kms from Nainital. It is by all accounts an unforgettable spot with its huge and ancient Oak trees amidst the group of lakes. It is often compared to the Westmoreland area of England.
Bhimtal
Bhimtal is located about 22 kms from Nainital and 11 Kms. from Bhowali. One can see the 17th Century Bhimeshwar temple, the 40 ft high dam and the boat in the Bhimtal Lake.
Mukteshwar is beautiful place located at an altitude 2, 286 m and approximately 51 kms away from Nainital. It is surrounded by fruit orchards and thick coniferous forest and an excellent picnic spot.
Ranikhet is a peaceful hill station 60 kms away from Nainital. It is the headquarters of Kumaon Regimental Centre of Indian Army. Ranikhet has many times been mentioned in Hindi literature.
This place is famous for the Anashakti Ashram where Mahatma Gandhi stayed for a fortnight. He was so impressed that he wrote a commentary on Anashakti Yoga. Literary giant Sumitra Nandan Pant was also born here.
Naukuchiya Tal
Naukuchiya Tal is an appealing cavernous spotless lake situated 26 kms from Nainital. The dimensions of the lake are 983 m (length), 693 m (breadth) and 40.3 m (depth) providing sufficient possibilities for rowing, paddling or yachting............

How to Reach Nainital

Air
Nainital city does not have an airport due to its rocky and hilly terrain. The nearest airport from the hill resort is the Pantnagar Airport, about 70 km or roughly 2 hours drive from the main city. You can get direct flights from Delhi to Pantnagar. However, only one airline (Jagson Airlines) flies there, about six times a week. 

Rail
The nearest railway station from Nainital is Kathgodam, situated about 33 km away from the main city. It is a ‘finishing point’ station of the North Eastern Railway and is well linked with New Delhi, Kolkata, Agra and Lucknow, through train services. From Delhi, one can take the overnight Ranikhet Express, which arrives at Kathgodam early in the morning or Uttaranchal Sampark Kranti Express, which arrives less conveniently at night. The second nearest station is Lalkuan, just about 60 km from Nainital. Lalkuan has rail links with Bareilly, Agra and Lucknow.

Road
A person going to Nainital by road has abundant choices to choose from. One can take the National or the State Highways connecting various cities to Nainital. The distance between Delhi and Nainital is about 304 km, so it roughly takes around seven hours to reach there.

Dehradun Excursions


Mussoorie

There are several places around Dehradun too that are flocked by the tourists. The other hill resort close to Dehradun is Mussoorie. It has almost become a tradition for all those visiting Dehradun to also make a trip to Mussoorie. 


Then there is Dakpathar 45 km away from Dehradun. The natural beauty of the place attracts several tourists. Further ahead is Kalsi, known for the Ashokan pillar of 450 B.C. The Archaeological Survey of India preserves it. 


Sahastradhara, another beautiful tourist spot just a few Kms from Dehradun.

The Haridwar Railway Station located in Haridwar is under the control of the Northern Railway zone of the Indian Railways. How to Reach Rishikesh

Road
By Car Delhi airport to Rishikesh by car is a good option for a hassle free traveling specially for foreign tourists who are traveling to India for the first time. It's a 6 to 7 hours journey.

It's best to take the train to Haridwar and continue by bus (45 min), by taxi (30 mins or by shared auto-rickshaw (40 min). Travelling by train comes recommended because they often run empty and the fares are low & run right-time especially in peak seasons or "Melas" (Fares) when bus routes are diverted in Haridwar............

Almora Excursions

Ranikhet


Around fifty Kms from Almora the quiet and beautiful cantonment township of Ranikhet, is famous for it's salubrious climate, balmy breeze captivating and panoramic Himalayan View and soothing and pollution free greenery of pines and oaks. It is also famous as the regimental center of the Kumaun Regiment of Indian Army- one of the most prestigious and the most decorated of all. The Kumaun Regimental museum and amicably maintained grassy and green golf course are memorable experiences even for the most experienced tourists.


From Ranikhet four Kms sojourn takes you to the Chaubatiya gardens famous for it's sprawling orchards of delicious apples, plums, peaches and apricots. It is result of the pioneering efforts of a British settler 150 years ago. In and around Ranikhet there are some famous temples of the Hindus for religious minded like Jhoola Devi Mandir, Ram Mandir, Herakhan Mandir, Kalika Temple and Binsar Mahadeva.



Kausani, situated around 52 KMs from Almora is famous for it's breathtakingly close view of the Himalayan Peaks and it's solitudes and greenery. The wide expanse of the famous Katyur Valley lies in front of it as you wake up to experience the Kausani sunrise. Kausani's beauty arrested the feet of even Mahatama Gandhi, who stayed for some time at this place. The memory that brief stay of that great man lingers behind in the Anasakti Ashrama.




Another great man of India the famous Hindi poet Sumitra Nandan Pant was born here. There is small museum to earmark that sacred spot. The famous folk singer Gopidas was also inspired by the beauty of Kausani. Pinnath (10KMs), Bura Pinnath (5KMs) and Bhakot are the highest points near Kausani.



Situated only 30 KMs away from the township of Almora lies Binsar nestled amongst thick forests of Oak and Rhodendron and yet offering surprisingly close views of the Himalayan peaks. The entire region is now a wildlife sanctuary and has a host of wildlife like Panther and Barking Deer. The temple of Binsar lies nearby. One of the many legends concerning Binsar states that 'Should anyone take away anything belonging to the God or his worshippers and avenging spirit and compels him conscience stricken to restore it twenty fold. Even the faithless and the dishonest are said to be reformed by a visit to Binsar.'

Bageshwar


Situated around 90 KMs from Almora, Bageshwar is now a new district headquarter and the centre of administration for the entire region called Danpur. The place is significant from both religious and tourist point of view. Situated at the confluence of the rivers Saryu and Gomti,  Bageshwar  is the seat of the famous Uttaraini fair which is held every year in January. The famous and ancient temple of Bagnath from which the township gets it's name has been attracting thousands of devout Hindus year after year since the birth of history. It is believed that Markandey sage has lived at the place and that Lord Shiva, one of the most important gods of Hindus had wandered about as a tiger. Even for the adventurous tourist  Bageshwar is a necessary destination since in order to reach the glaciers of Sunderdunga, Kafni and Pindari one has to necessarily cross  Bageshwar.

Shitla Khet


Situated between Ranikhet and Almora this picturesque place not only affords a wide view of the Himalayan peaks but is also full of fruit orchards. Scouting camps are frequently held here and there is a beautiful temple of Syahi Devi around 3 KMs away on a lovely mountainous trail. The birth place of the first chief minister of the province of Uttar Pradesh, Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant is a place called Khunt situated nearby. Some years back a centenary memorial has been built at this place to commemorate the memory of this great son of the soil.

Jalana

Situated 35 KMs away from Almora in picturesque surroundings Jalna offers a wide panoramic view of Himalayas. There are a number of orchards which produce a number of variety of fruits such as apricots, peaches, peers, plums and apples.

Baijnath


Lying in the Katyuri valley, 19 KMs away from Kausani is the small but ancient town of Baijnath. It was once upon a time the capital of the Katyuri dynasty of kings and the place was then called Kartikyapura.




The remnants of those glorious days lies at the bank of the Gomti river in the form of a group of temples.




The temple is famous for it's ancient and magnificent stone idol of the Hindu goddess Parvati.




Around 8 KMs from Baijnath on the Gwaldam road is lies the famous Kotkimai temple. One can also visit Pandusthal which lies nearby.

Dwarahat


Situated in a wide valley of the river Ramganga, Dwarahat lies around 32 KMs from Ranikhet. And is a very important town from both historical and archeological point of view and may also have been the capital of some branches of Katyuri kings. Around 10 KMs from Dwarahat lies the famous Doonagiri temple atop a hillock which is famous in legends for containing the herb drug Sanjivini. The temple dedicated to the goddess Durga is situated in the midst of beautiful and dense forest and a tea estate. Some distance from Dwarahat lies the temple of Naithan Devi.

Manila


Manila literally means enchanting. The famous temple of Manila Devi , the family goddess of Katyuri kings lies around 85 KMs from Ranikhet. The surrounding forests and the Himalayan views from this hill ridge are worth remembering. 

Katarmal




Situated around 17 KMs Northwest of Almora, Katarmal is famous for 800 years temple dedicated to the Sun God. The only temple in India dedicated to Sun is the Konark temple in Puri at Orissa.

Patal Bhuvaneshwar


Fastly emerging on the international tourism map, Patal Bhuvaneshwar is a unique wonder of the nature.




Situated about 110 kms. from Almora towards Gangolihat, in Pithoragarh district the underground cave of Patal Bhubneshwar has a vertical tunnel shaped 40 meters path for getting inside into it from the ground.




After reaching at the bottom, the main passage opens into several small horizontal caves, out of which the longest accessible cave is 120 meters horizontal in length. The most important thing is to notice is the mystery of natural carving of many animals, Gods and Goddesses in such a fine way that all it seems real. The cave temple of Patal Bhubneshwar is traditionally believed to be the abode of thirty three crore deities. These marvelous creature of the nature can evoke weird romantic fancies and images in the religiously inclined person.

Jogeshwer


Situated around 35 KMs from Almora, Jogeshwer one of the most important religious places of Hindus in Kumaun and is believed to be the abode of the one of the twelve 'Jyotirlingas'. It is even mentioned in the great epic of 'Mahabharata'. The great temple complex is situated in a narrow and beautiful valley covered with Cedar trees. Two streams Nandini and Surabhi flow down the hills and meet near the sacred spot. Dense grove of Cedar trees, perpetual verdure, and sweet murmur of the riverlets give a peculiar charm and sanctity to this place.




Their are 124 temples and hundreds of magnificent statues of exquisite craftsmanship. The oldest shrine is of the 'Mrityunjaya' and the biggest shrine is of the 'Dindeshwara'............

Champawat

Champawat is small district in Uttarakhand state located near Pithoragarh and named after King Arjun Deo’s daughter ‘Champawati’. It is known for being the erstwhile capital of the famous Chand dynasty of Kumaon. As per a legend, the place has mythological importance as well. It is said that Lord Vishnu once appeared in Champawat, in his Kurmavatar. The place is famous for its historical, archaeological and sculptural significance. A small fort and the temples of Baleshwar, Champadari, Ratneshwar and Durga embellish the city. 

There are numerous famous temples situated near Champawat, like Narsinh Danda, Hingla Devi, Hidimba Ghatotkach Temple, Maneshwar, Karanteshwar and Sun Temple (at village Ramak). Other than this, the area is known for the magnificent scenic vista it offers. Situated at 1,615 meter above the sea level, Champawat boasts of a topography that varies from Terai areas to the high mountain ranges. 

The Terai areas of the district are very hot, whereas the hilly ranges are relatively cooler. Around 65 percent area of Champawat is sheltered with flora and fauna. Rest of the areas is made up of agricultural land, residential land and meadows. The plains of Champawat are covered with plenty of exotic and traditional species of plants, like Amla, Ayur, Ecliptus, Babool, Teak, Sagon, Jamun, Bans, Bail and Madar.


Places to See:

Baleshwar Temple


Baleshwar temple, was built during the reign of Chand dynasty, is located in the heart of Champawat city. The presiding deity of this temple is Lord Shiva. The temple is known for its magnificent stone carvings.

Nagnath Temple

Known for its wonderful ancient Kumaoni architecture, Nagnath temple is also dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was destroyed by the Rohilla and Gorkha invaders in 18th century. Today, the glorious carved doorway and a double storey wooden structure, the temple's only remains, tell the tale of its magnificent architecture.

Mayawati Ashram

Located at about 22 km from Champawat, Mayawati Ashram is a major centre for spiritual learning in Uttarakhand. People in search of spiritual satisfaction come here from various parts of India and abroad.

Vanasur-Ka-Kila


Vanasur-Ka-Kila is a fort located approximately 20 km away from Champawat, at an elevation of 1859 m from sea level. A legend about the fort goes that the assassination of Vanasur, a demon, took place here.

Ek Hathiya ka Naula

Approximately 5 km away from Champawat, Ek Hathiya ka Naula is a uniquely structured place. It is said to be constructed by one-handed artisan, overnight. 

Kranteshwar Mahadev

Dedicated to Kandev, Kranteshwar Mahadev temple is situated at a lofty hilltop, in the east of Champawat. It is also called ‘Kumarpad’.


Lohaghat is a small town situated on the banks of Lohawati River, in Tanakpur district. It is basically known for housing a number of beautiful temples, scenic beauty and historical-mythological associations. Apart from that, this place is also famous for its grand Holi and Janmashtmi celebrations.
