Lalbagh palace, Indore, Madhya Pradesh

The palace saw its construction started in 1886 under the Holkar ruler Tukoji Rao Holkar II which was carried out in three stages. Finally, under the rule of Tukoji Rao Holkar III in 1921 the construction was completed which reflects today as one of the finest specimen of architectural skills and mastery in Indore. The descendents of the Holkar’scontinued to reside in the palace until recently, and a part of the palace serves as a museum showcasing royal artifacts, arms & ammunitions, rare paintings and splendor from its golden era.

With a perfect synthesis of decorative and renaissance styles on display, the palace is now managed and developed by the Government of Madhya Pradesh as a cultural centre. Open to general public allowing them to experience the aura and majesty of the bygone age, the palace attracts visitors from far and wide. The chief attraction comprises of splendidly proportioned and furnished rooms, richly adorned with ornamental moldings and frescoed ceilings. Sprawling over 28 acres of area, the complex once used to house one of the best rose gardens in the country, unfortunately it has lost much of that old glory.
